Fifty-nine awards for excellence in communication were presented at Maine Media Women’s annual conference at the Samoset Resort May 3. Fourteen of them went to the Midcoast Review’s staff and contributing writers for their work on this publication in 2002.

This annual competition, sponsored by the organization, received over 100 entries from members and non-members in categories ranging from writing, editing, and photography to radio and television production, Web design, poetry, and book publication.

“This is significant recognition for so young a publication,” said Review co-founder, Editor and Publisher Ria Biley. “These awards are particularly meaningful for us, especially since we fall through the cracks of eligibility for most other journalistic competitions. The Midcoast Review is a unique publication; it’s hard to define us as either a ‘newspaper’ or ‘magazine’ using traditional guidelines.”

Ten of the Midcoast Review’s awards were for writing and the other four were for editing.

First-place awards went to contributing writer Carole Hallundbaek for her Special Series Soul Proprietors, Editor-at-large William Lannon for the editorial entitled Who’s not profiting? and Editor Ria Biley for page layout.

Lannon also received second place awards for writing in Feature Story (Marlene Long, the Digital Diva) and Personal Columns (Alarums & Excursions); and third place for Special Articles in both Arts & Entertainment (Country Roads Arts Tour, Belfast Art Alliance and Lyn Snow Watercolors) and Business (MERI, Oyster Creek Mushroom Farm, Cellar Door Winery) categories. In all, Lannon’s work for the Midcoast Review received five awards.

Second place honors went to contributing writer Marilis Hornidge for her Special Series on entrepreneurs (Scrapbooking, Kayak Watchdog and Sailmakers); Feature Story (Kiddie Couture) and Personality Profile (Puzzle Guy).

Second place in the Reviews category was awarded to Associate Editor Noreen O’Brien’s Books for Entrepreneurs.

Editor Ria Biley received second place for Editing: Headline Writing and Editing: Non-Daily Newspaper categories, as well as Editing: Special Sections category for October 2002’s Election Supplement.

Judges for MMW’s Communications Contest are deliberately selected from out of state to ensure complete objectivity and all are professionals who are experts in their individual fields. Since each submission is judged on its own merits using a point system similar to a film critique (a system of one to four stars); the high scorer in a given category does not necessarily receive First Place; nor does being the only entry in a given category guarantee placement. The contest is not restricted to members of Maine Media Women, but entries are limited to work published or broadcast prior to December 31 of the previous year.
